Talia Weisberg
Talia Weisberg is a connector, passionate about facilitating rich Jewish experiences and helping people make informed Jewish decisions. She earned her AB from Harvard University and wrote an honors thesis about Bais Yaakov, of which she is an alumna, and its role in the evolution of Orthodox women’s formal religious education. While at Maharat, Talia has completed internships at Congregation Sherith Israel, Beth David Synagogue, MIT Hillel, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She has learned Torah at Drisha and the Center for Modern Torah Leadership and trained with the Eden Center, iCenter, Clal, and JOIN for Justice. She lives with her family in Cambridge, MA.
“Koh somar l’bais Yaakov - So shall you say to the house of Jacob.” These words that Hashem said to Moshe began the process of Matan Torah, and are interpreted by Chazal to refer to the Jewish women.
When Sarah Schenirer founded a school for girls in Poland in 1917, she called her nascent movement Bais Yaakov in reference to this pasuk. She was a deeply spiritual person, and she asked herself - what can I do to serve Hashem? The answer she came to was, I can teach girls and women, I can reveal to them the beauty of our rich tradition. Sarah Schenirer showed the world that the Torah, and by extension full and unfettered access to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, belongs to girls and women as much as it belongs to boys and men.
As a graduate of both Bais Yaakov and now Yeshivat Maharat, it is my imperative to carry in my heart Frau Schenirer’s message, to cling to it tightly and live out the legacy that she left for me. We are all here today due to Sarah Schenirer’s belief that women can and should learn and live Torah. May I and my colleagues be blessed with her vision and strength, with her sense of purpose and unwavering emunah.
As the navi Yeshaya said, ““Bais Yaakov - lechu v’nelcha b’ohr Hashem!” Ladies, come let us walk in the light of Hashem!
