Harriet & Norm Copel
Temple Beth El has been an important part of our lives for many years. Norm’s first experience was as a religious school student in 1954, the first year of worship in the Park Avenue building. In 1973, we were married by Rabbi Shallat and joined the Temple.
Our involvement with the Temple started through the Religious School when our children were in second and third grades. Harriet taught third grade and became a member of the Religious School Committee. She then co-chaired the Committee and also served on the Temple Board for several years.
As a volunteer on parking lot duty, Norm was introduced to the building committee. Norm first worked with Richard Piken on the House Committee and later became House Chair. He joined the Board at the request of Alan Freeman and remained on the Board for many years working with at least eight Temple Presidents! An active member of Men’s Club, Norm was the first recipient of the Charlie Mayer Service Award.
Always willing to help, Norm as House Chair (facilities manager), was often called upon to fulfill unusual requests. One time during a blizzard, Selma Cohen’s grandson was to become a Bar Mitzvah. She called Norm asking if he could bring the Torah to the Huntington Town House. With the Rabbi’s approval, Norm transported the Torah in driving snow so the Bar Mitzvah could take place. Just another day in his life as House Chair!
We are still involved with Temple affairs and Harriet is once again on the Board.
“It is exciting to be part of this vibrant community. It is this community of our friends and family that has been with us through good times and bad. This is what makes Temple Beth El a very special place!”
