We are thrilled to recognize the excellence that Alysa Segal brings to her teaching. Alysa's Educational Philosophy is to work as a team to make each child feel safe, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. Respect for her co-workers shows the students that they, too, are respected. Her favorite moments are when the light 'goes on' and students realize

they can read!

 

Alysa's fundamental view of education, the amazing Kindergarten team she helped build, and her great character make her an inspiring person and successful teacher.

Stuart Katz

 

We are thrilled to honor Stuart Katz with the Distinguished Alumni Award. Stuart is a heroic leader who brings together the character, vision, and leadership San Diego Hebrew Day aspires to instill in every student.  

Stuart has worked tirelessly to promote mental wellbeing and empower communities to address the increasingly critical mental health challenges. 
 
In addition to his expansive volunteer work of Mental Health First Aid in Israel, Stuart is CEO of TAL Tours and Deluxe Kosher Tours. He is writing a book entitled, Travel Therapy: Around the World in Search of Happiness.

Mazal Tov Morah Segal and Coach Ray on this most deserved honor!  You have both played such an important role in the education of our children.

Morah Segal-- All of our kids learned so much in your Kindergarten class, which served as an important transition from preschool to grade school. The care you showed to each of them along with the learning skills you taught them served as a foundation for all of their achievements and are fondly remembered by all of our children until this day.
Coach Ray-- You have used sports as a way to guide our kids on how to become successful and build personal character.  You taught them the importance of hard work, teamwork and camaraderie. The kids felt they were learning just how to play basketball or football-- but they will carry the life lesson skills that you taught them for the rest of their lives.
Thank you both for dedicating yourselves to our children!

Alysa, we never had the privilege of having you teach any of our boys, and we are sad they never got to experience the warmth and love you radiate!
 
Ray, we are so indebted to the effort you put into the kids of our community. The values you emulate and expect from them both on and off the court or field, are lessons that will serve them well for the rest of their lives, in terms of discipline, commitment and behavior of good sportsmanship, working hard for both the team and for their own personal best selves. Ray, you have worked so hard to make a meaningful life for yourself and for all those around you and for that we admire you and congratulate you. This recognition could not go to a more deserving person.

year. To Shoshana who will be continuing as a senior

at Stern College as a bio major. To Lia for graduating

Torah High and continuing onto Midreshet Moriah in

Israel. To David for finishing 10th grade at SCY High,

Elisheva for finishing 7th and Tzeira completing her

5th grade year and going into Middle School.
We have a huge amount of gratitude to all our

children's wonderful teachers for their hard work and dedication to our

family. We especially want to thank Mrs. Alysa Segal who taught all 5 of

or children with love and devotion as their Kindergarten teacher. A special

thanks to Ray Mills who continues to be a special part of our children's

health and wellbeing, and goes above and beyond to help them succeed.

Coach Ray,
It is hard to find a coach for any sport that really helps children develop on and off the court. The amount of care and genuine love you show to each student is unmatched and I believe this speaks greatly to the type of person you are. Since you have been a part of our children's lives, you have brought only positive experiences, lessons, and motivations. Someone parents can reach out to for questions and concerns, someone they can trust. Someone who most importantly values winning off the court in life as human beings, which in turn propels student success in the classroom and on the court. You are a true inspiration and example of what every person in this industry should resemble. We are incredibly grateful and blessed that you are in our and our children's lives and your efforts have and continue to make a

true impact for generations to come.

Mazal Tov, San Diego Hebrew Day School on your 60th anniversary!!!  For 49 of those years, our family was intimately privileged to be recipients of all the priceless gifts this outstanding school, its dedicated faculty, administration, Governing Board, and especially its incredibly talented, devoted Headmaster, Rabbi Weiser, have given to the greater

San Diego Jewish community. 
Throughout these six decades, Hebrew Day has continuously focused on looking ahead, to re-creating an ever more dynamic learning environment imbued with love and commitment to our religion, our heritage, and above all, to each other. Tribute to Mr. Reuben Klamer (z"l)

 

Mr. Reuben Klamer (z"l) began his involvement in the San Diego Hebrew Day School by teaching our middle school students what it means to be an inventor, how to harness creativity and how to create games that keep people engaged. Reuben was so inspired by the Middot (good character) and potential of our middle school students, he became interested in developing their leadership skills. This led to the creation of the Reuben Klamer 'Game of Life' Leadership Program, which continues to inspire and engage our students.

Kitty was the matriarch of her beautiful family, deeply tuned in

and connected to each of her descendants.  Kitty's was a voice

always heard within the community.  Kitty's impact

on countless families and on our community

was immeasurable, and we miss her.
 
May her memory continue to be

an inspiration to us all.

The Tesslers were long time and visionary supporters

of the Hebrew Day School.
Our first Scholarship Fund Banquet, held in June 1983

was in honor of Edythe and Leonard Tessler.

The Tesslers always took a leadership role

in supporting Jewish education.
