Cultural Activities for Reuth’s Older Adults
The Sheltered Community Housing Project at Reuth was originally established in the 1940s to provide housing for the new immigrants fleeing Europe. Today, Reuth’s housing complex is home to 185 older adults, roughly half of whom are Holocaust survivors. While the residents’ primary needs are for shelter and medical care, Reuth has always recognized the vital importance of enrichment via cultural and social activities: festive celebrations of the Jewish holidays, guided trips and cultural outings throughout Israel, and musical get-togethers and sing-alongs.
Although the pandemic has put a serious crimp in our original programs of entertainment, has stimulated our ingenuity in creating new ones. A central closed circuit community television channel is being set up for the residents, and Reuth is currently purchasing computers, converters, and software to connect the infrastructure to all the apartments. This will enable the staff to send direct announcements, showcase community activities, such as gym sessions, classes and lectures, and also include the residents in programming and selection of content. Our plan is to be able broadcast a wide variety of programs and performances to fit the individual interests of the residents. With the help of your contributions, we hope also to hire a much-needed coordinator to mange the project in all its aspects.
