Michael A. Bové Secretary/Treasurer, Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association Local 831, I.B.T.
President & Founder, NIA Community Services Network, Inc.

Michael A. Bové is a proud life-long resident of the community he calls “Regina Heights” and has been an active contributing member of New York City his entire life. His family’s rich local history began in 1903, when Frank Bové (Mike’s grandfather of Neapolitan descent), at the age of 21, travelled from his birthplace on President Street to the southwest section of Brooklyn, on 12th Avenue, where he purchased his first of several properties from 65th to 68th Streets. After originally settling in Bay Ridge after their marriage, Mike’s parents, Louise Citriniti and Frank Bové, Jr., moved to “Regina Heights” where they raised their four children, Michael, Pamela, Dennis and Leslie, and became active members of the community.

With his parents as role models, Mike learned at a very early age the value of giving back to the community and made that an important part of his life. Mike would go on to join the National Guard 106th Infantry, 42nd Rainbow Division in 1969 and soon began a career in public service in 1972 with the NYC Department of Sanitation. In 1973, he joined the Columbia Association, became the group’s Vice President in 1989, and remains an active board member. He has served as a delegate to the Grand Council of the Columbia Associations in Civil Service for the past 30 years with distinction. In 1992, Mike joined the Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association-Local 831 as a business agent, was elevated to Trustee in the year 2000, promoted to Recording Secretary in 2001, and in 2003 was elected to the position that he still holds as Secretary/Treasurer. Michael’s dedication, untiring efforts, and exemplary record have proven invaluable.

Mike maintains affiliations with numerous charitable organizations in New York City. He has been an active supporter of the Community Mayors for the Tri-State area, helping with special events for the handicapped for the past 32 years and an active member and supporter of the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, Queens Chapter since its inception. His work with the Department of Sanitation, Community Service Division, had Mike actively involved throughout the Borough of Brooklyn, helping to resolve problems and develop important programs for many community organizations and community boards. After recognizing that he was inspired by his involvement with so many local groups in other communities, Mike became the founding president of the St. Rosalia-Regina Pacis Neighborhood Improvement Association, Inc., now NIA Community Services Network, Inc. Working with Monsignor Piombini in 1981, along with support from several prominent local residents, he immediately began to take care of his “Regina Heights” community by coordinating clean-up projects, sponsoring food drives, and working with Catholic Charities to obtain NIA’s first grant.

He returned as President of NIA in May 2000, a position he continues to fill with pride and enthusiasm. NIA Community Services Network, Inc., led by an impressive leadership team, has created a workforce of over 800 employees and a multitude of valuable services that reach thousands of children, families, and seniors each day. NIA provides its expanded services and events at nearly 50 locations throughout Brooklyn, in Queens and Staten Island, and is responsive to all in New York City that may seek assistance. NIA programs focus on youth development educational advancement, family and community support, senior, immigrant, and quality of life issues, fulfilling its mission of “Building Strong Children, Strong Families, and Strong Communities.”

Michael received many important honors and has been recognized for his activism, enthusiasm, and reputation for bringing people together to make a difference in communities throughout the City of New York. Michael was recognized with the Man of the Year Award at NIA’s 30th Anniversary Celebration!

Michael, along with his wonderful wife, Maria, raised their four outstanding children, Michael, Gina, Charles, and Dennis, in the community he so much loves. Michael and Maria have been richly blessed with seven precious grandchildren, Emily, Kayla, Sophia, Gabriella, Frank, Matteo, and Alessia.
