Dr. David and Sharona Kay
Honorees

Sharona grew up in Beverly MA, Springfield PA, Savion Israel, Endicott NY, Binghamton NY, Newton MA, Princeton NJ, Jerusalem Israel, New York NY, Philadelphia PA, Brooklyn NY, and Pittsburgh PA. In fact, before moving to Boca she had never lived in the same city for more than 5 years.

David never grew up. He was born in Winnipeg, where if you yawned while outside waiting for the school bus your eyelids would freeze shut and you had to take your mittens off your hands to defrost the ice so you could again reclaim your vision. When 18 years old he emigrated from the frozen tundra to the multicultural amalgam that is Washington Heights.

They moved to Boca in 2004 so David could join Dr. Zorik Spektor in his Pediatric Otolaryngology practice, and Sharona (having been dragged around city to city from medical school to residency to fellowship) could adapt her teaching of inspired inner-city youth to the darling children of Boca Raton High.

Having successfully procreated to produce 3 male offspring, Sharona was somewhat surprised to be summoned by Zevi’s EC2 teacher, who announced that she was moving back to England and was appointing Sharona as the new Hillel Day School PTA President. And so was the start of her Boxtop-armed militia.

Surprise number two for Sharona, as she taught AP US History and a Holocaust studies course of her creation at Boca High, was a call from Yeshiva High School explaining that Tani’s AP US History teacher would be out on maternity leave, and if Sharona didn’t teach the class then Tani would not learn the material, fail the AP test, and never get into college. Oh, and could she also start a Holocaust course. And be on the board. And be on the executive board. And serve on the Head of School search committee. And mentor less experienced teachers. And serve on another Head of School search committee. And work on the curriculum. And serve as the student academic advisor. And join the administration. And change her role in the administration. And change it again. And again.

Meanwhile David, between cutting up babies and children of all sizes, encountered a joy and relief that only a very few get to experience: he was no longer President of the Boca Raton Synagogue.  The bowties, “Shabbat Shalom Boca Raton” and facetious announcements were retired; the scalpel and cartoon scrubs were not.

Having now been formally rebranded as grandparents, Savta and Gran’Pappy enjoy spending as much time as they possibly can with the two cutest little girls in the world, much to the delight of JetBlue airlines.
