Cantor Brian Mayer

Cantor Mayer has been the Cantor of Temple Emanu-El in Providence since 1989. In 2002, he was featured in an ABC-TV documentary, “To God’s Ear,” which was nominated for an Emmy Award. In 2009, he was the Artistic Director of the award winning Kristallnacht Concert which featured Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame. A 25 year veteran HaZamir conductor, he has led the choir in Carnegie Hall, The Metropolitan Opera House, David Geffen Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Brian is a recognized scholar of Jewish liturgical modes and chants. For 10 years, he served as the Dean of the School of Jewish Music at Hebrew College, where he continues to teach as an Associate Professor of Jewish Music. In 2019, he received the Samuel Rosenbaum Memorial Award, the Cantors Assembly’s highest honor for lifetime achievement in the cantorate.
