Individually and together, Shelley and Stew have made an indelible impact on nearly every committee and aspect of Congregation Har Shalom since joining our community in 1982. As professionals and in retirement, they have invested their time and contributed their skills toward the success of our Early Childhood, Religious School, and Bar/Bat Mitzvah programs, Gemilut Hasidim and Tikkun Olam initiatives, and various programming and operational committees.  In 2021, they led Har Shalom's initiative along with St. Francis Episcopal Church to support two Afghan refugee families following their evacuation and relocation to the United States.
 
In addition to serving on numerous Executive Committees and in various roles in Sisterhood, Shelley’s expertise in Early Childhood Education was a blessing when she served as the interim director of the Sherman ECC and on various school-focused and clergy search committees. Additionally, she was chair of the Shabbat Theme committee for which Har Shalom received a Solomon Schechter award. Shelley is currently the co-chair of our special Hazzan/Cantor Search Committee, and she is leading Har Shalom’s Sela DC Public Charter School Volunteer Reading program.
 
Along with serving as Congregational President (2001-2003), Stew co-founded the Har Shalom Players and has co-produced the annual Broadway musical production since 2005. As a former Human Resources senior executive in the Federal government, Stew brought his unique knowledge to our Personnel Committee and the development of a comprehensive Leadership Development course for Har Shalom members seeking to increase their community involvement. He leads Har Shalom’s Meals on Wheels initiative. 
 
Shelley and Stew have been married for 53 years – and are the parents of Marci who is married to Eric and Blake who is married to Jodi, and grandparents to Jack, Paige, Ari, Noah, Brady, and Jackson. Together they enjoy traveling in the U.S. and internationally and playing bridge.
