This week we lost the powerhouse who brought to life the dream that a Jewish Day School could succeed in Northern Virginia. More than 36 years ago Marilyn Davis took the hope of Beth El Hebrew Congregation's Rabbi Arnold Fink and Agudas Achim Synagogue's Rabbi Sheldon Elster in a coordinated venture to create a school offering a Jewish education and strong secular academics in a day school setting to children from across all parts of Northern Virginia. This was Gesher's beginning and how it came to be. Marilyn Davis was the driving force and made that Day School happen. To grapple with enormous challenges she energized family, friends and the community to create a Jewish kindergarten and elementary school with all the resources of an established school. She left nothing to chance but called upon educators, religious leaders, philanthropists and community members to volunteer their physical, intellectual and financial resources. She was tireless in her efforts and has left the Northern Virginia Jewish Community with the vibrant fruits of her labor. May her memory be for a blessing.
