Mitch Wasson grew up on Long Island in an active conservative Jewish household. His parents, Irving and Ethel Wasson were founding members of the Hicksville Jewish Center. His father was the chief gabbai, and his mother was the Sisterhood president when Mitch became a b'nai mitzvah. His parents moved to Boca Raton, Florida in 1970, and were founding members of B`nai Israel. His parents led by example, resulting in he and his sisters, Barbara and Andrea becoming active in their local synagogues.

When Mitch and his wife Phyllis moved to Prince George's in 1979,they joined Shaare Tikvah in Temple Hills, Maryland. He served on the Board of Directors and chaired the Legal Affairs Committee.

Upon moving to Olney, Maryland in 1986, Mitch became actively involved in B'nai Shalom of Olney. He was, and still is on the Religious/Ritual Committee and served as its chairperson for several years. He was elected to the Board of Trustees on a number of occasions, as well as being a member of the Executive Committee, as liaison first to the Education and Religious Affairs committees, and then as liaison to the Religious/Ritual Committee.

At B'nai Shalom of Olney, Mitch has been a gabbai, as well as arranging for various members of the congregation to be gabbais on a weekly basis. He also distributes various honors during weekly Shabbat services. He recites haftorahs and leads afternoon and evening services on a regular basis. He conducts shiva minyans and Shabbat services when needed.

Mitch and Phyllis have one son Andrew, who became a b'nai mitzvah at B'nai Shalom of Olney. Before leaving for college, Andrew periodically read from the Torah. Andrew and his wife Libby have two daughters Addy and Charlotte and are currently members of Beth El synagogue in New Rochelle, New York.
