Steve Doherty
Grand Marshal
Steve Doherty hails from the far-off land of Massapequa, Long Island; the youngest of four boys raised by Jack and Helen Doherty- both first generation Irish Americans. All four of his grandparents emigrated from Ireland in the 1920’s from the counties of Donegal, Kerry and Sligo. He is a 1987 graduate of Chaminade High School and a 1991 graduate of Fairfield University.
He moved to Eastchester in 1999, the home town of his wife Christine, a 2015 parade Honoree, a former town councilwoman and also a Fairfield graduate. If the straightest route to heaven is paying Jesuit university tuitions, Steve and Christine are in the fast lane. Their daughter Katie is a 2021 graduate of Fairfield, daughter Mary is a senior at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, and son Jack is a sophomore at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Along with coaching all three kids in various sports throughout the years, and spending six years on the board of The Community Fund, Steve became involved with the Irish club in 2004, as a volunteer for the inaugural parade in March of 2005. He officially served as Journal chairman, but was really the unofficial gopher for founding Co-Chairs Tom Huvane and Jim Hendry.
After serving as the Clubs recording secretary for two years, it was determined Steve move on from that position as he always forgot to bring a pen and notebook to the meetings. He then found himself as John Phelan's Vice President during the years 2009-2010 where he was often heard to sycophantly mumble "great idea, John"
With experience like that, the obvious next step was President, a position he held for two years.
With the effects of the financial crisis still resonating, the main concern those years were the clubs and parades finances. However, Steve claims there was never a worry, due the work and protocols put in place during previous administrations. It was also during this time that the club established its partnership with the Mary Denning Scholarship Foundation.
When asked what the Club means to him, Steve replied: "Christine and I have always tried to pass on to our children not only the pride of being Irish, but also what our ancestors sacrificed to come to the United States. Both the Club and parade help relay and honor those messages. I'm grateful for that, and proud to be recognized for my contributions".
