Sisterhood of L’Dor V’Dor is proud to honor Naomi Altschul with this year’s BQLI Region “Woman of Achievement Award.” Although Naomi has been a member of L’Dor V’Dor for only five years, she has been actively involved in the Jewish community from her earliest years.

Naomi grew up in Brooklyn and was a member of the Madison Jewish Center at which she was Confirmed. After graduating from James Madison High School, she attended Adelphi University, graduating with a B.S. in Education. While teaching third grade in the Lawrence/Cedarhurst school district, she completed her M.A. degree. After teaching for five years and becoming vested in the school district, Naomi became a stay-at-home mom to her daughters, Pamela and Deborah.

The family moved to Oceanside and immediately joined the Oceanside Jewish Center. Over the years, her husband Stan served as President of the Couples Club, Men’s Club, and the Synagogue. While Naomi was busy supporting Stan’s activities, she was also involved in OJC’s Sisterhood as Corresponding Secretary and Torah Fund chair. She participated in all the usual Sisterhood activities as well. When Pam and Debbie were in elementary school, Naomi became involved in their school’s PTA and soon became President.  During that time, Naomi went back to Adelphi and after graduating with an MBA degree, was hired to work at Chemical Bank in their Management Training Program. She initially worked at the branch level was promoted to District Marketing officer and finally Commercial Loan officer. Over the years, she rose through the ranks, leaving the Bank, now known as JP Morgan Chase, with the title of Vice-President.

Upon retirement from the bank, Naomi became involved in the Long Island UJA/Federation campaign. She was asked to join the UJA Long Island board and eventually became chair of the Oceanside Women’s Campaign. In addition, Naomi joined the Jewish Women’s Foundation of New York. The Foundation originally started as an offshoot of UJA but, within a short period of time, became a stand-alone organization. Today it is a network of Jewish women leaders working for an equitable and just society in the United States, Israel and around the world. As a member of the board, Naomi chaired the Marketing Committee and the Grants Committee. The name of the organization has recently been changed to Elluminate.

Stan and Naomi became snowbirds in 2012. They joined Temple Torat Emet in Boynton Beach, Florida. Naomi was asked to serve on the Membership Committee and recently hosted a new members’ gathering in their home.

Naomi activated her life membership in Hadassah and became involved in the Florida chapter, Tamara, in her community.  She now serves as Co-Education Vice-President and for the past four years has led a series of lectures pertaining to various Jewish topics.

In 2019, Naomi and Stan sold their Oceanside home of 56 years and moved to North Shore Towers. Once again, it was time to join a new temple. They chose L’Dor V’Dor and were welcomed warmly. Both Naomi and Stan serve on the board of their new temple and Naomi is involved in all Sisterhood activities.

Being involved is a strong part of Naomi’s Jewish identity. Naomi and Stan enjoy sharing their love of Jewish values and Jewish history with their wonderful family: granddaughters Gabrielle and Max, grandson Cameron, sons-in-law Rob Liflander and David Shapiro and, of course, their super special daughters Pam and Debbie.
