Joan Sauber
Israel Center of
Conservative Judaism

For nearly four decades Joan Sauber has served as a vital member of our synagogue’s Sisterhood Board, initially as a member of the Israel Center of Hillcrest Manor (ICHM) and then, after the merger, as an invaluable officer on the Sisterhood Board of Israel Center of Conservative Judaism (ICCJ). Long-term commitment to family, career, and synagogue are part and parcel of the nature of one of ICCJ’s 2023 Women of Achievement honorees.

Born and bred in Washington Heights, NY, Joan grew up and met her bashert, Arthur, while both were still in their teens. Wed on March 16, 1952, their love endured for 69 years, until Arthur’s recent passing. Joan and Arthur were gifted with two daughters, Lois, who married Bob, and Judy, who married Art. In turn, their family blossomed with 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. After their two children were grown, Joan’s caring and giving personality was ready to find a new outlet.

Responding to an invitation extended by ICHM Sisterhood Board member, Natalie Cohen, to attend a meeting, Joan was impressed by what she heard about the Sisterhood’s commitment to the synagogue, and shortly thereafter she became a member of this important arm of the shul. That was back in 1984. So impressed was the Sisterhood Board by Joan’s dedication that the following year, 1985, she was asked to join the governing body of Sisterhood.

Additional responsibilities were bestowed to her as she subsequently served as Membership Vice-President for two years and Financial Secretary for one year. Since 1990, she has overseen the books for first ICHM’s, and then ICCJ’s Sisterhood as Treasurer. Despite the conveniences of computer spreadsheets and Microsoft programs, Joan maintains the financial records in her trusty ledger, making all entries by hand. Yet, her accounting records would stand up against H & R Block any day.

Joan’s commitment to Sisterhood extends well beyond her fiduciary responsibilities. Whenever and wherever a helping hand is needed, she can be found, assuring that every Sisterhood endeavor is a success. It is with great pride that the Sisterhood of Israel Center of Conservative Judaism recognizes Joan Sauber for her many years of devotion and dedication by bestowing upon her this long overdue acknowledgment as BQLI Region’s Woman of Achievement Award recipient.
