Ellen Wasserman was taught early on about being a volunteer by her mom, Susan Berman Levine. Ellen watched as her mom ran yearly fashion shows for the Howard Beach Judea Center Sisterhood. So, it was only natural when her sons attended Solomon Schechter School of Queens that Ellen would get involved with the PTA. At that time, she also sat on the board as Assistant Treasurer of the Conservative Synagogue of Jamaica Estates.

After her dad, Jerry Berman, passed away in 2006, Ellen and her family joined Temple Gates of Prayer. Right from the beginning, she got very involved. She joined Rabbi Thaler’s Women’s Bat Mitzvah class, which was lovingly called the Sweet 16. She volunteered to chant Torah for that service and continues to chant Torah and give D’vrei Torah when asked for the yearly Sisterhood Shabbats.

When the pandemic started and the Sisterhood decided to do monthly Bingo games, she stepped up to be the Bingo caller. She gives of her heart whenever Sisterhood asks her to do anything. And as a throwback to her youth, she has volunteered to model at all the Fashion Shows, which she always did for her mom back in the day.

Ellen has sat on the Board of Directors at TGP and currently she is one of the Chairs of the Holiday Committee, which she loves. Every Thursday night you can find Ellen on the Zoom Minyan leading services. In 2021 Ellen was asked to be the Treasurer of the BQLI Region of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. This is a position she is so proud of. And recently, she was asked to sit on the International Board of Women’s League. She is looking forward to attending her first Women’s League Convention this summer.

As much as she loves volunteering for Temple Gates of Prayer and BQLI Region, nothing gives her as much joy as her family, her 3 men, her husband of almost 38 years, Alan, and her two sons Zach and Jacob. And
she cannot wait to add a 4th man into her family when Zach marries Rob Kraditor next June.

Ellen is so appreciative to be chosen as Temple Gates of Prayer’s 2023 Woman of Achievement.
