Roberta Sugarman and her husband, Stuart, have been active members of Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre (HERJC) since 1984. Their two children, David (41) and Amie (37), are graduates of the HERJC Religious School and had their B'nai Mitzvah there. David and his wife Holly have two children, Leo (9) and Jordana (5). Amie and her husband Nathan Kaplan have two children, Theo (4) and Phoebe (1 month).

 

Roberta has been a member of the Board of Directors of HERJC since 1996. She served as Vice President of HERJC for six years, Recording Secretary for six years and a member of the Executive Committee for 12 years. She also served as Co-Chair of the Board of Education, Co-Chair of the Dinner Dance Committee and a member of search committees for various synagogue positions. In addition, she has done a great deal of legal work for the Synagogue. She has been a member of the Sisterhood Board for many years and is currently Chair of the Sisterhood Book Club.

 

Roberta obtained her BA Degree from SUNY Binghamton and her JD Degree from Hofstra Law School. After graduating from law school, she worked as an Associate at a major law firm. Then, after her children were born, she worked at a series of positions of increasing responsibility at the Long Island Rail Road, including Chief of Staff and Acting General Counsel. She then worked for the MTA as Special Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, retiring from the MTA in 2016. She continues to work part-time for the MTA in her retirement. Roberta was responsible for the legal work on many important LIRR and MTA projects, including the Barclays Center Arena and East Side Access.

 

Roberta enjoys spending her time with her family and friends. She also enjoys traveling, reading and attending theatre.

 

Roberta is pleased to have been named as this year’s Woman of Achievement and congratulates the other recipients of this award.
