Karen practically grew up at Hillcrest Jewish Center, as her parents and grandparents joined Hillcrest in 1950. They were all active and involved from day one.

Karen attended Hebrew School at Hillcrest, had her Friday night Bat Mitzvah there and was married to her late husband, Sheldon, there. They were founding members of the Young Marrieds Club. Karen served as editor of the club’s newsletter for 12 years. She sat on its Board and co-chaired the Program Committee. Karen and her husband became Life Members of Hillcrest Jewish Center in 1987.

Karen was co-chair of Junior Congregation and a member of the Education Committee. She worked as Secretary of the Day Camp and served as Committee Chair for 15 years.

Karen followed her mother into Sisterhood, becoming Co-Vice President of Membership, Chair of Nominating Committee for 5 years, Business Manager for 3 years and finally President in 2015 to the present. She also serves on the Hillcrest Jewish Center Board of Trustees.

While doing all this, Karen was the Office Manager of the Flushing-Fresh Meadows Jewish Center for 18 years.

Karen is a life member of Hadassah and was honored to receive The Ima Award from her chapter for her dedication to and support of Israel.

The core of her life is her family - daughter Stephanie, son-in-law Jeffrey, and grandchildren Jacob and Alyssa.

Hillcrest Jewish Center Sisterhood is proud to recognize Karen Rothman as our Woman of Achievement for her selfless contributions to our Synagogue and community.
