Ada Marcus was born in Brooklyn a year after her parents arrival in the U.S. from a displacement camp in Germany. They were both Holocaust survivors, as is her brother, Phil, 10 years her senior.

Ada met her lifelong partner and husband, Gary, at Queens College. They have 2 children, Abby and Scott; Scott is married to Deb with two girls, Ashley and Sarah. They joined CBT (then-Wantagh Jewish Center) when their son was four years old. Her daughter and son both attended nursery school and Hebrew School at their shul and had their respective B’nai Mitzvah there as well. Ada’s own Bat Mitzvah took place at our shul about forty years ago with a group of women who had never had the opportunity to celebrate that event as children.

Ada taught elementary school for 35 years in NYC and started to become more involved in synagogue activities within the last 20 years. Her first role was Torah Fund Chair for Sisterhood. She then became Sisterhood Recording Secretary, a position she still holds. Ada has been part of various Sisterhood committees including paid-up membership dinners and fashion shows. During COVID, Ada was the tech person who started CBT’s Zoom meetings since they could not meet in person. The book club meetings are often on Zoom, and Ada takes care of that. In addition, last year she oversaw running the annual Fashion Show for Sisterhood.

For the past five years Ada has also been Education VP and is very involved in the slowly growing Hebrew School. As part of our education program, Ada arranges Zoom and occasional in-person lectures for CBT’s congregants. She has also been involved in writing grants to help keep the synagogue as safe as possible for our congregants and guests. So far, the grant writers have received two grants.

Ada plans to continue to help Sisterhood in any way she can.

She is deeply honored and touched to be presented with the Woman of Achievement Award and recognition.
