There are so many words that can be used to create a vivid picture of Debbie Bochner, but we’ll concentrate on just a few: dynamic, dedicated, energetic, and accomplished.

Her dedication to the Forest Hills Jewish Center (FHJC) is almost genetic. A child of parents who were married at FHJC, Debbie attended the Nursery School and came full circle, becoming a teacher there for 20 years.

That circle encompasses Debbie’s many accomplishments. While teaching, she earned her Master’s in Early Childhood Education and established a successful tutoring business. In 1995 she became an Adult Bat Mitzvah. Her energy and dedication continued to manifest itself to serve her shul in so many ways: She was a leader of the Drop-in Center when her children were young; she’s a Past President of the Parents’ Association; a former Chair of Youth Activities; and has been a member of the Center’s Board of Trustees. She also sits on the board as a Governor at her club, The Westside Tennis Club. Debbie runs the book club at the club and chairs the Pool Committee.

Now, there’s something new and exciting on Debbie’s agenda. She has been selected as Coordinator with Hazzan Randall Levin to head the recently formed B’kor Cholim Committee.

After retiring from teaching, Debbie transferred her boundless energy to the Sisterhood and has become a vital, involved member whose opinions and suggestions are valued. In her busy life, she makes time to run our Or-Li Judaica Gift Shop. It is her role as leader of Sisterhood’s Daytime Readers that demands the spotlight. The group of book lovers, who meet every 4-6 weeks (on Zoom, since the pandemic), attracts readers beyond the sphere of Sisterhood. Debbie, an avid reader, suggests the book, researches the book and author, and leads the discussion.

The Forest Hills Jewish Center is in Debbie’s genes. She is the second of a four-generation FHJC family. She and her beloved husband of 40 years, Jeffrey, are the proud parents of the third generation: Nicole and Amy and their husbands Adam and Jared. Grandchildren Jack, Layla and Miles constitute the fourth generation. In fact, Jack is now in the Nursery School about the same age as his grandmother was when she began her journey… l’dor v’dor
