Nir and Gilat Miller's journey is a testament to resilience, community strength, and the power of giving back. Their story began in Israel, where they met at Bar Ilan University while pursuing their law degrees. This union not only combined their Ashkenazi and Sephardic heritages, with roots stretching from Eastern Europe to India, but also laid the foundation for a strong family of six.

The Millers' temporary move from Israel to Potomac, Maryland in the Summer of 2023 was initially driven by professional opportunities, but it quickly became a pivotal chapter in their lives. They quickly began integrating into their new community by joining Beth Sholom Congregation and enrolling their children at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School. They were managing the expected challenges of navigating a new neighborhood and school along with language barriers for their four children aged 7-16 with their characteristic good humor and optimism. However, it was the unexpected health challenge of their youngest child, Tom, that truly tested their resilience.

Faced with months of medical treatment at Children’s National Medical Center Nir and Gilat demonstrated unwavering support to Tom and their family, putting all else aside while they focused on Tom’s recovery and their other children’s well-being. Tom was already hospitalized on October 7th and that day and the subsequent war in their homeland made the process even more challenging. As they navigated this difficult period, the support from their extended family in Israel and the Potomac community alongside Bikur Cholim of Greater Washington, proved invaluable. Their experience not only strengthened bonds with their new community but also ignited a desire in them for volunteering and helping others in similar situations.
