Dr. William Stern, known to his friends and family as Buddy, was born and raised in Los Angeles. Before moving to Silver Spring to do his medical training he had stops in Cambridge at MIT and New York City at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. However, the most important year was the one he spent as a junior year abroad at the Hebrew University where he met his life partner, Sarah just 50 years ago. After moving to Kemp Mill in 1977, he became active in many communal endeavors, including being President of Kemp Mill Synagogue and officer and board member of Berman Hebrew Academy, Operation Embrace and of course, Bikur Cholim. He has also been President of the Montgomery County Medical Society and the Maryland Governor for the American College of Gastroenterology.

As a physician, he strongly believes in the work of Bikur Cholim and the importance of its role in assisting patients and their families in times of need. He has seen this through his own patients who have been well served by the various activities including the Hospital Kosher Pantry’s, meal deliveries, and transportation for those who need it.

Buddy believes the compassionate care and treating every human being with kindness, dignity and respect exemplified by Bikur Cholim of Greater Washington  staff and volunteers is as important in a patient’s recovery and wellbeing as that offered by the medical professionals.

Buddy lives with his wife, Sarah, whom he is very proud of in her role as Founder and President of the Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET). Their children span the globe, living in DC, Cleveland and Modiin, Israel. They have 7 grandchildren, ages 7,6,5,4,3,2, and 1.
