REFLECTIONS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

What’s Happening at Cardin? My Fair Lady.

A sense of melancholy tinged with delight permeates the air for the first week after each of our school productions. The cast and crew are exhausted yet exhilarated, and the rest of the school is humming and singing the tunes from the show. This week, after our 6th annual production, the blues threatened to overwhelm the pleasure as a majority of the participants will be graduating this year and this was their last opportunity to tread the boards as Cardin students.

My Fair Lady, our 2nd annual production including community players, was a huge success. I’d like to take the opportunity to share with you just a few of the comments we received:

“I was bowled over. That was the best high school theater that I have ever seen.  Magnificent. Your casting was brilliant…The scenery wonderful. The kids were terrific. And the director … exceptional.” - Rabbi Joel Zaiman, Rabbi Emeritus, Chizuk Amuno Congregation

“Yasher Koach! The play was FABULOUS!!!  I have never seen a school performance of such high quality. The level of talent and passion and professionalism!  WOW!  The whole production was amazing and so much fun. You are one talented lady and your students are beautiful people.” - Elaine Witman, Director, the Shofar Coalition

“All I can say is WOW!!!!!!  I don't know how you do it year after year - you are amazing!  My Fair Lady was fantastic- the cast and crew were outstanding- you should be sooooooooo proud.  I can't even begin to imagine how much time and effort goes into producing a show like this. Can't wait til next year!!” - Nancy Hiken, parent of Cory ’10 and Jeremy, ‘09

“I felt privileged to work with such an outstanding group of young men and women. They are indeed special and I know they will go on to make their school and families proud." - Francine Wartow, assistant director

“It was a wow from beginning to end.” - Carolyn Helfman, former Middle School Head, Krieger Schechter Day School

“We were so impressed with the level of talent from your students.  The accents were delightful and the singing voices were astounding.  I think I was most impressed with how well your students adapted to performing in a space that they rehearsed in for less than 10 hours (as the program noted)! I also was very happy to see community members participating.” - Amy Larimore, Profiles, Inc.

“…we were wowed by the quality of the performances. Please pass on our kudos to the cast, crew and director. It’s hard to believe it was a high school production.” - Dorrie Anshel, prospective parent

“I simply cannot imagine a more exquisite production of My Fair Lady!  What a pleasure it was to watch these talented teens today in this enchanting performance. I was captivated from the very first
moment to the standing ovation. Kol HaKavod to the incredible faculty, students and volunteers who made this happen.” -
Erika Schon, Director, The Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University and Conductor, HaZamir Baltimore

If you were not among the close to 1,000 audience members, I encourage you to purchase the DVD, available for $25. Please contact slinde@shoshanascardin.org for information. If you can’t purchase the DVD, I invite you to call me and I’d be happy to have you join me in watching My Fair Lady on DVD in about four weeks.

Text Talk on Parsha Beshalach
with Emily Boling, '10
With which Cardin student would it be most fitting to learn parsha in preparation for Shabbat Shira? Why, our own Eliza Doolittle, Emily Boling, ’10, of course! And in honor of Shabbat Shira, Emily and I focused on the Song by the Sea. According to the notes found in The Stone Edition of Shemo, a “song is a profound and unusual spiritual phenomenon.” Emily was in full agreement. In fact, she noted, singing is a venue to express emotions and feelings that words themselves can’t express. So I asked Emily if the words are important. She responded in the affirmative but reiterated that the song, comprised of the music and the lyrics, is a way of expressing feelings. Specifically, the Song at the Sea, sung by the entire people, without regard to each person’s position, family or tribal affiliation, was an expression of a universal feeling- an understanding of their direct connection with God. Here, for the first time in the Shemot narrative, God is interacting directly with the people, without Moses and Aaron serving as intermediaries, and the people therefore realize how miraculous the splitting of the sea was and perceive it to be the highest point- the culmination- of the exodus from Egypt.

Shabbat Shalom!

MUNICATIONS
Off Broadway

By high school, I was personally observant. But, I also wanted to audition for school productions, not an easy decision, since it would involve a lot of compromises, rehearsals on Shabbat, and Friday night performances. I was cast as Murray in The Odd Couple, and as the flying prince in a children’s play that toured local elementary schools. But the best was yet to come.

Mr. Schlossberg, our wonderful theatre teacher, chose Fiddler on the Roof for the spring musical. Great news for a nice observant Jewish boy!  When I was cast as Motel, miracle of miracles, it was one of the happiest moments in my life.

Now, Mr. Schlossberg was an incredible teacher, devoted to his students, and passionate about the theatre. I loved going to rehearsals and cherished every minute until opening night and (by the way) the show received rave reviews.

On Friday night’s performance, during a black out, the cast took their places for the Sabbath Prayer Scene. There were ten Shabbat tables with families on the stage, in the aisles, and on high risers in the air - brilliant blocking. Golde and the other women lit the candles, and we all started to sing “May the Lord Protect and Defend You.”

All of a sudden, I was overcome by a strong feeling of sadness, that I was out of place, that I shouldn’t be there.

The Sabbath was not a performance for me. And I couldn’t accept where I was and what I was doing. Believe it or not, I started to cry. I shouldn’t be here right now, but at home with my family having dinner, and getting an early sleep so I could be at shul tomorrow on time.

At the end of the production, I made a decision. I wouldn’t perform in any more school plays because of my commitment to observing Shabbat. I didn’t know at the time, but I was actually choosing my path in life.

Maybe if I had had the opportunity to attend a Jewish Day High School like Cardin, I would have been able to observe Shabbat and participate in the school’s drama program. Maybe this would have been my first step on the way to Broadway!
