How to Read to Children: A Course in Theory and Practice
Instructor: Dr. Diane Person
Adjunct Professor; Long Island University,School of Education, Department of Teaching and Instruction

This course will address the teaching and enhancement of story reading as a literacy foundation at the early childhood and primary school levels. Emphasis will be on selecting and reading outstanding, award-winning books to children. It will also be shown how reading aloud aids in the development of comprehension skills, a requisite to learning to read beyond decoding and sight recognition of words. Book selection and reading aloud skills as well as follow-up activities that emphasize comprehension and allow for simple assessment will be introduced. The reading-writing connection and a diverse range of children’s literature on significant themes for Jewish Day School classrooms will be used in each session.
